RE: Leave hitch attached to camper, any problems.

I leave my hanging all summer. Putting it back in can be a pain but I get as close as possible to being right on the mark, lower it into the bed, pull the release handle, move the hitch to were it needs to be and finish up. One time I got it just right and didn't have to unhook from the trailer...one time out of 100 and of course I was alone so no one believes me!!!

RE: Hard Slide Travel Trailers

We had a Outback 27' with a rear slide out queen and never had a problem with the rear bed. If you are camping in cooler weather it can get a little cool back there because there isn't anything under you. People have added insulation under the mattress and solved the problem.

RE: Will twenty thousand buy a new diesel pickup

Short answer......NO
Long answer....
IF you could find a stripped 08 Chevrolet 2500HD 2 wheel drive WITHOUT air conditioning on a dealers lot, you could get GM Employee Pricing on it right now and your pricing would look like this:
MSRP 33,780.00
GM Employee price 29,438.10
National Rebate 1,000.00
Bonus Cash 4,000.00
Your price 24,438.10 plus your states taxes, tags, titling fees.
I ran a GM locate for 4,000 miles from Delaware...that would cover most of the US....there are no Chevrolet like this on the ground. There are a few with A/C out there but they will cost you at least $700 more...

RE: 2 WD diesel gets more mileage?

If you are looking at the same vehicle, then the fuel mileage will be almost the same. I just built on the GM computer a 2500HD 2wd and 4x4. The axle ratios are the same, the tires are the same and the 4x4 adds 247 pounds to the weight of the truck. So the mileage should be very close to the same.
Since the 2500's are not rated for fuel ecomomy I built out a 1500 2wd and 4x4, both 5.3L with 3.73 ratio gears. 2wd mpg 14 city/20 highway...4x4 mpg 14 mpg city/19 mpg highway.
If you gain 1 mpg going to a 2wd then the savings isn't that much.
100,000 miles/13 mpg=7692.3 gal. X $4 = 30769.20
100,000 miles/12 mpg=8333.3 gal. x $4 = 33333.20
You will save $2564 in 100,000 miles. It is a little bit of money but not enough to keep me from getting a 4x4.
For those of you that think us 4x4 owners are "keeping up with the Jones's" some of use do live in areas that get snow, some of us use are trucks to hunt or surf fish, and some of us have to be able to respond to fires in all kinds of weather.

RE: Chocolate Covered Bacon

I think I will give it a try. I love bacon and chocolate so why not!! We had deep fried pickles at a rally a few weeks ago and I found them to be very tasty too.

RE: Comments on Aerolite vs. Outback Q slides with bunks

I had a Outback 27RSDS that had a rear slide and never had an issue with the trailer. I rear slide is supported by two rails that attach to the bumper and the back of the trailer, it slides across the rails very easy. The only downside I can say about the rear slide is that you have to store the rails and it adds a little bit of time setting up. Other than that, I liked the rear sliding queen bed.

I "removed" my antenna off the 5th wheel with a bridge.....
Picked up a whole new antenna and installed it in about 1 hour. Try to get the same model and it is a very eazy install.

RE: Do I need a slider hitch?

I have a short bed Chevy and a sliding hitch.....
I have only used it a couple of times, and I have only not used it once that I should have. After taking the truck & trailer to a parking lot and trying to get the camper as close to the truck I decided that the trailer wouldn't hit the truck....and I was wrong. About 3 month later, I was making a u-turn up the street from my house and the trailer and the truck...lets just say they got friendly!!! After 1 week in the body shop, $700 out of my pocket and $800 out of the insurance company the truck is as good as new. The trailer still has the scar on the front driver side and I have left it there as a reminder!

RE: XM Radio questions??

If you get a XM unit that has a FM transmitter built into it you can use it in any car. I one I have used in the past is call a MyFi, it is portable, has headphones that have an antenna built into them so you can listen to the XM while mowing the grass!!! You can also plug turn it on in the truck and tune in on FM radios that are nearby. Also if you have a XM plan you can get XM on your computer for free.

RE: Duramax diesel smell

Fuel filter changes are very important on diesels. It can effect many things from starting, power, and fuel mileage. I haven't had any problem with weird smells for the trucks exhaust. But would like to caution you about the fuel additives, make sure you are using an additive that contains NO ALCOHOL. If you look in your owners manual it will tell you what to look for in an additive.

RE: Lancster Pa. area

I would have to second Old Mill Stream if you want to be close to where everything. Spring Gulch is nice, Roamers Retreat is nice too, in fact I haven't found a really bad campground in the area.
As for things to do. The is outlet shopping, amish shops, Dutch Wonderland (an amusement park for younger kids), and Hershey Park is not to far away. I don't know how long or when you are planning on going but we go there at least twice a year.

RE: well here's one for the books

I always try to help as much as I can. But that doesn't mean that you let youself be taken advanage of!! You did the right thing help as much as you can and then if that isn't enough for them, pack and leave.
Now for the good "I helped story"..
I was driving up the NJ turnpike and stopped for a coffee at a rest area, there was a family there with the hood up on their car. I asked if I could help and the father said he needed a jump. No problem, gave them a jump and before he lefted he asked for my address, I gave him a business card (I sell trucks), about 2 weeks later I got a check for $50 from his company, a thank you letter, and one of their company jackets. I sent the guy a thank you and he asked if I could help his company find a few trucks. In the next 5 years, I sold his company 75-80 trucks....well worth the 15 minutes it took to help someone out. He has passed away now and the company is gone.
Don't stop trying to be nice, someday you might be the one that needs the help!!!

RE: Bike Riding

We just got back from Hickory Run State Park in White Haven PA (I know that it isn't one of your requested states). There is a rails to trails run from White Haven to Jim Thorpe PA, it is in the Lehigh Gorge State Park. My son and I did it last Tuesday, 26 miles all "downhill" (2% grade) on crush and run with only one road crossing. We did it for free because my wife didn't want to ride it this time, she dropped us off at the top and picked us up at the bottom. But there are a few companies in the area that will haul you to the top for a fee.
It is a beautiful ride and is a very easy one to do. I would like to do it again when the leaves have changed. If you make it that far north I would
highly recommend the trail.

RE: Tow Vehicle Question

So I am assuming the guy I saw at a KOA earlier this year shouldn't be towing a Fleetwood Terry Triple Slide 29.5' Fifth Wheel with a Dodge Ram 1500 Mega Cab Hemi?
We tow a 33' (true overall length) 2006 Keystone Outback that has a listed weight of 8800 lbs with a 2006 Dodge Ram 2500 CTD Quad Cab Short Bed with no problems at all. Just try to find as light a fifth wheel as you can that suits you and your family and you'll be fine. I've seen guys towing heavy triple slide 5th wheels with 250 / 2500 Diesel's. Not sure it's the safest thing to do and not sure what modifications they have made to beef up suspension on the tow vehicle but have seen many, many people doing it.
I pull this trailer with a Chevy 2500HD Crew Cab 4x4 Duramax and have not had any problems. I am inside the limits of my truck, even with the 60 gallon aux tank full.

RE: Change tires from 245's to 265's ?????

I changed the LT245/75R16E out for LT265/75R16E tires on my truck right after I bought it. The dealer cannot change the speedo but you should have the anti-lock brakes reprogramed to the correct size. It is a simple reprograming of the ABS system and will not affect the speedo. I work for the dealer and I called the GM Tech Line to get the new calibration settings for the 265's and GM will not give them, they said the truck came with 245's and is not available with 265's. I even gave them the old "The SRW 3500 has 265's on it" but it won't work....
